Difficult Russian Sounds

Hello there! As you may have noticed, there are some sounds in Russian that don’t exist in English. Learning to pronounce them correctly will significantly improve your general pronunciation.

:exploding_head: Here you have these sounds and some explanations to learn how to pronounce them:

  • Ы - it’s somewhere between the [I] sound in the English word “hockey”, and the [u] sound from “boom”. Or… try to say “oooooh” and smile at the same time. It’s really hard to explain, so be sure to find words with this sound in any show and try to repeat it!
  • Ж - like “sure” in “pleasure”
  • Ш - like the first “sh” in “Shropshire”
  • Щ - like the second, softer “sh” in “Shropshire”. This sound needs your tongue on the roof of the mouth.
  • Ц - like “ts” in “tsetse”
  • Й - like “y” in “May”

Make sure to learn to pronounce them! Many Russian words differ from each other just by one letter, so you don’t want to mess up and say something you don’t mean, right?

I hope this helped! Leave a comment if you have any questions! :heavy_heart_exclamation:
