Do you know in how many countries Portuguese is spoken?

With approximately 280 million speakers, Portuguese is the 5th most spoken language in the world, the 3rd most spoken in the Western hemisphere, and the most spoken in the Southern hemisphere of the planet.

  9. Equatorial Guinea (adopted Portuguese as official language in 2007, but its use is still limited)
    

Besides these countries, there are other regions where Portuguese is also spoken:

  • Macau (not an independent country. It is area of the Chinese territory)
  • Goa (part of India colonized by Portugal)

The International Day of the Portuguese Language is celebrated on May 5th.
The date was established in 2009, within the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP), with the purpose of promoting a sense of community and pluralism among Portuguese speakers. The celebration also encourages the discussion of language and cultural aspects of Lusophony, promoting integration among the peoples of these nine countries.
