Graphic accents in Portuguese

here are three graphical accents in Portuguese, namely: the acute accent, the circumflex accent and the grave accent. These accents mark the tonic syllable of the word.

  1. Acute accent (').

This is used to indicate the tonic syllable and the open vowel.

Examples: está - is; sílaba - syllable; médico - doctor; rapé - snuff; também - also; célula - cell

  1. Circumflex accent (^).

This is used to indicate the tonic syllable and the closed vowel.

Examples: você - you; alô - hello; câmera - camera; português - Portuguese; avô - grandparent

  1. grave accent or crase (`).

This is used to indicate a crase, which is the fusion of two vowels.

Examples:
Vou à escola - 'm going to school
Refiro-me àquilo - I mean that
Sou fiel à minha esposa. - I am faithful to my wife.
