What does ‘SOKO’ in the show ‘SOKO Hamburg’ (Hamburg Homicide) mean?

Hi! I’ve recently finished ‘SOKO Hamburg’ (Hamburg Homicide). I really enjoyed the show and I literally binge watched it all the way to the end because it was that good and interesting. And as a plus, I also got to learn a lot of new German words! :purple_heart:
I did wonder since I started watching it, what does ‘SOKO’ mean? Can anyone tell me if that word is common in German and how it is used? Thank you!

It stands for Sonderkommission, which literally means “special comission”. As far as I understand it, it’s a special team of investigators that come together to solve a particularly difficult or complex crime. I hope this helps :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:
