Did you know that Russian words that start with the letter “A” are usually foreign?
The only authentic Russian words that start with “A” are:
- авось [avOs’] - maybe
- азбука [Azbuka] - alphabet
- аж [azh] - as much, even
- аз [az] - elements, principles
- ага [agA] - yeah
The fact is that there were quite a few ancient Slavic words in A, but the vast majority of them later developed the sound “yot” before A, becoming words in Я [ya].
